Bromma Expands System Functionality and Adopts
Open Standards Approach To SCS3 Applications

The world’s leading crane spreader company, Stockholm (Sweden) based Bromma, continues to pioneer advanced applications functionality on its SCS3 spreader communications and control technology, while at the same time adopting an “open standards” approach to communications and control architecture. Bromma technology offers customers the spreader industry’s most robust technical capabilities (diagnostics, prognostics, reporting) as well as open standards design, which give terminals tremendous flexibility to adapt to changing technical preferences.

AN OPEN STANDARDS APPROACH TO DESIGN

Specifically, Bromma has adopted open design standards in three areas involved in SCS3 control:

 hardware/PLC
 communications; and
 programming

Bromma SCS3 can operate on any of several open communications standards, including ASi, BCAN, and DS444 (CiA). Programming of Bromma technology follows the international standard for programming of controllers. Terminal users retain maximum flexibility to make technical adjustments and adapt their Bromma spreaders to a variety of communications architecture, based on the preferences of their terminal engineering or IT staff.
UNPARALLELED FUNCTIONAL ADVANTAGES
At the same time, Bromma believes that SCS3 offers terminals a truly unparalleled suite of functional advantages over competing spreader communications and control technology. These functional advantages lead to spreaders that are more reliable – spreader fleet reliability that can be measured by specific metrics, such as higher MMBF and MTBF.
In addition, Bromma’s ongoing technical update programme enables terminals to keep current with the latest Bromma technology and software advances. For example, many new Bromma applications are particularly ideal for automated terminal environments, where very fast fault diagnostics and spreader fault repair is essential to prevent the interruption of automated operations.

Touch-screen SCS3 technology has broad information gathering and analysis capabilities that that are beneficial in automated as well as manually operated terminals.  These include the ability to perform very fast, very specific on-line spreader fault diagnostics in the event of a spreader downtime occurrence; make remote, online settings in order to shorten the duration of downtime events and optimize machine performance; identify on a predictive basis preventive maintenance that should be performed on the spreader to prevent a problem from occurring (this involves identifying when spreader performance begins to fall outside certain defined “normalized performance” parameters); and  capture specific “fact-based” data on spreaders in the terminal fleet that can be used for more informed service interval and preventive maintenance planning (moving from “we think” to “we know’ in order to identify spreader problems before they become problems) .

“Our objective is to be a customer-responsive organization,” notes Lars Meurling, Bromma Vice-President, Products and Solutions. “We are committed to providing our customers with both the most technically advanced and technically adaptable spreader solutions,” notes. “Bromma SCS3 is, without question, the most feature-rich, application-rich spreader control and communications system in the industry. No competitor can provide the range of spreader diagnostics, prognostics, and online sensor adjustments that SCS3. can. At the same time, if a terminal wants to adopt an alternative approach, there is nothing in our open standards approach to spreader communications and control design that will be an obstacle to that decision. Bromma spreaders out-perform, with any communications architecture.”
